Los Angeles Rams: Tavon Austin trade helped clear cap space for rookies

The Rams dealt five-year veteran receiver Tavon Austin to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a sixth-round pick Sunday.

The Cowboys allowed Bryant to leave earlier this month after eight seasons with the franchise to free up an estimated $8m in salary cap space.

Following Saturday's trade, Austin should find himself in more comfortable surroundings as he seeks to evolve into a consistent threat-no matter how he receives his touches. In five years as a Ram, Austin scored 12 receiving touchdowns, 9 rushing touchdowns and three punt return touchdowns, but only once had more than 500 receiving yards in a season.

But following the fall-out from his defeat by Carter at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre, O'Sullivan was in no mood to quit. Asked if he thought he might be fined by disciplinary chiefs, O'Sullivan added: "I don't really know".

The compensation heading to Los Angeles is only a sixth-round selection, No. 192 overall. He had just 13 catches for 47 yards while playing in all 16 games.

Needless to say, there's not enough positives or proven track record that shows Austin is capable of flipping a switch and being a quality fantasy player in Dallas. Although his price tag makes him expendable, the former first round pick has a chance to prove himself as a valuable member of America's Team. For his career he's averaged a running back-like 8.7 yards per catch. Dallas figures to be an advantageous situation of him, as nothing is set in stone with the receiving depth chart at this point.
