Swachh Survekshan 2018 Indore is India's cleanest city followed by Bhopal and Chandigarh

The Swachh Survekshan 2018 is the first pan Indian exercise assessing cleanliness in urban India, and surveyed a total of 4,203 cities from January 4 to March 10, 2018, covering all the 4,041 Indian cities that have a population of 40 crore.

Among capitals, Greater Mumbai was ranked the cleanest, while Rajasthan's Jaipur was judged the fastest mover state capital. Category-wise assessment of open-defecation free (ODF) progress, collection and transportation of solid waste and processing of solid waste saw their respective weightages being increased in this year Swachchh Survekshan. "The best practises adopted for the maintenance of sanitation in the city has resulted in bagging the cleanest city in the country".

Indore has bagged the title of the cleanest city in India, followed by Bhopal and Chandigarh, according to a government cleanliness survey.

Indore and Bhopal have retained their positions as the top two cleanest cities for the second consecutive year and Chandigarh has been ranked as the third cleanest city.

The efforts of the District Administration, Mysuru City Corporation and the citizens paid off as the heritage city Mysuru topped the Cleanest City list among the Medium Cities category in the Swachh Survekshan-2018 rankings.

Last year BMC was at the 29th position.

Jharkhand was chosen as Best Performing State, followed by Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. "You have to wait to get the details of rankings of all cities, including the ones that did badly", an official said.

As compared to 2017, where Swachh Survekshan was conducted in 434 cities, for this year, the scope was enhanced manifold.

The agency also collected citizen's feedback directly and performance of the Swachchata App was also monitored. Based on the performance in Swacch Survekshan, 2018, it has been made a decision to confer awards 29 cities/ cantonment boards at National Level, 20 cities at Zonal Level and 3 states having the best performance in the urban areas.
