Kim summit to cost Singapore 'around $20 million': PM Lee

A bilateral meeting of the US and North Korean delegations will follow, said the official.

While en route to Singapore, Trump said he looked forward to meeting Kim on what he anticipated would be an exciting day.

Kim is welcomed by Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during his visit to the Istana, the official residence of the prime minister, following the North Korean leader's arrival in Singapore.

-North Korea tensions back to last year's precarious state, or worse.

On Monday Pyongyang's state-run newspaper, one of the only outlets North Koreans can freely read, appeared to be laying the groundwork for a new, normalized relationship with the US.

UN Security Council Resolution 2270 forbids loaning aircraft, ships and crew to North Korea, but Beijing apparently had US approval.

You would never know something as historic as the Trump-Kim summit was about to happen in the city state of Singapore. Ambassador Kim arrived with one advisor, past a scrum of television cameras. Trump canceled the meeting, but made a decision to move ahead with it a week later after a visit to Washington by a top North Korean official.

But Choi and Sung have since met five times at the demilitarised zone in South Korea in a whirlwind of diplomacy to get the historic meeting on track.

Prime Minister Lee wished Kim a success for the summit and expressed hope that the US-North Korea meeting will advance the prospects for peace and stability in the Korean peninsula and the larger region.

North Korea wants a staged approach to dismantling its nuclear weapons program and a security guarantee from the U.S. in return.

A security guarantee could come in the form a peace treaty to formally end the Korean War.

"The fact that we have been chosen as the site of the meeting... says something about Singapore's relations with the parties - with America, with North Korea - (and) also our standing in the global community", said Lee. In late April, Trump tweeted, "KOREAN WAR TO END!"

But the spectacle was absorbing.

Authorities imposed tight security around the summit venue and related luxury hotels - including installing extra pot plants outside Kim's expected accommodation to obstruct reporters' views.

Kim arrived Sunday on a Chinese plane, not his official plane, which is called "Chammae-1" and named after the goshawk, North Korea's national bird.

Kim remained ensconced in the heavily guarded St Regis Hotel, where he is staying.

The Trump-Kim summit, which will be held at the Capella Hotel on Tuesday morning, will mark the first time a North Korean leader has met with a sitting U.S. president.

But does Kim simply want to play Trump for sanctions relief?

Lee said the cost was worthwhile.

This has included backing away from an original demand for North Korea's swift denuclearisation. Rodman went on Instagram to announce that he will be there to "give whatever support is needed" for Trump and Jong Un.

One top Trump adviser cast the move as a show of strength before the Kim meeting. The stakes for our nation are simply too great.

"I am on my way to Singapore where we have a chance to achieve a truly wonderful result for North Korea and the World", Trump wrote in a pair of tweets.

A bad deal with North Korea, one that hastens or brings about the withdrawal of United States troops from South Korea, would likely accelerate the loss of USA influence in the world's most populous region, and thereby the decline of the U.S. as the world's superpower.

The talks would also involve "building a permanent and durable peacekeeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula and "the issue of realising the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula", the agency said".
