Following his departure from the summit Saturday evening, Trump tweeted that Trudeau was "Very dishonest & weak" during the summit, drawing criticism from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, including Arizona Republican Sen.

In response, Trump attacked Trudeau on Twitter, calling him "dishonest & weak".

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland responded to the White House assault by saying ad hominem attacks were not helpful, that Canada would retaliate to United States tariffs in a measured and reciprocal way and that Canada would always be willing to talk.

President Donald Trump's top economic adviser Larry Kudlow accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of "betrayal", after Trudeau defended Canada against Trump's proposed tariffs and announced that he would be moving forward with retaliatory measures against the US.

In the week leading up to the the G-7 Summit President Trump engaged in the most Trumpian sort of diplomacy: he very publicly attacked out closest allies.

The EU then announced tariffs on United States goods ranging from Harley-Davidson motorcycles to bourbon. He told CNN's Jake Tapper that "of course" Trump's tweets about Trudeau actually had to do with North Korea "in large part".

Trump's change of heart appeared to have been invoked by Trudeau's comments on Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs against Canada and other allies. "Canada is the biggest single purchaser of USA goods and services in the world - it's not China, it's not Mexico, it's not Britain, it's not Germany".

He said that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nations should "pay much more for the Military", tweeting that "Germany pays 1% (slowly) of GDP towards North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, while we pay 4% of a MUCH larger GDP".

British Prime Minister Theresa May, who also attended the G7 summit in Canada, stood with Trudeau on the issue of trade.

"President Trump played that process in good faith".

"I understand the president was upset", Mr. Feinstein told CNN.

At the moment that opponent is the unlikely figure of Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.

This followed two days of feuding with some of his closest allies - one French official told reporters of a "very unusual" and "bitter" exchange Friday between world leaders, describing the USA president making his case in a "Rant".

"There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad-faith diplomacy with President Donald J Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door", he said.

When Trump left Quebec, it was thought that a compromise had been reached, despite the tension and the determination of European leaders Macron and Merkel to push back against the United States president's protectionist policies.
