Trump's claim North Korea no longer a nuclear threat raises eyebrows

Trump's Tuesday meeting with Kim produced a wave of USA concessions in exchange for vague, nonbinding promises from North Korea, but it did make nuclear war all but inconceivable at the present moment.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday morning declared an end to the North Korean nuclear threat.

Earlier Wednesday, North Korea's state KCNA news agency said denuclearisation would be a "step by step process" with "simultaneous action", a stance that appeared to contradict the USA refusal to offer sanctions relief before North Korea gives up its nuclear weapons.

Kang said South Korea and the United States shared the same goals and approach to achieving denuclearization.

Denuclearization or the "complete, verifiable, and irreversible dismantlement" of North Korea's nuclear weapons - long the hallowed and increasingly unrealistic USA objective - was present only in name. And so do the North Koreans.

If North Korea's illegal nuclear program forced the US military to stop training with its ally, then it sends a powerful message to leaders everywhere: The US can be blackmailed with nukes.

Despite Pompeo's insistence that sanctions would hold until denuclearization occurred, he offered few details on how the complex process of complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization would be implemented. He then told the reporter he found the question "insulting and ridiculous and, frankly, ludicrous".

"I really believe otherwise I wouldn't be doing this", Trump said of the summit. "Let me assure you that the "complete" encompasses verifiable in the minds of everyone concerned. One can't completely denuclearize without validating, authenticating", he said.

This has been taken to indicate that the United States would grant concessions to Pyongyang along the way. The summit, the first between a North Korean leader and a USA president, ended with the leaders signing a peace deal.

Other public figures have been more directly critical.

Rebel Wilson's defamation payout from magazine publisher Bauer Media reduced on appeal
Wilson was not present for the judgment but she took to Twitter the night before, saying she had already won the case. Wilson was originally awarded $4.5m last September , which was the biggest defamation payout in Australian history.

Kim said there would be a "major change" in the world.

For South Korea particularly, the suspension of the annual military exercises came as a surprise.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived at Osan Air Base south of Seoul from Singapore early Wednesday evening.

"I think he will start that process right away", Mr Trump said. -South Korean military exercises. Already, North Korea has criticized the US and South Korea's military drills, saying they're not helpful for peace talks.

"Apparently, Washington and Pyongyang are moving exactly in this direction", Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters in Moscow.

North Korea's official news agency on Wednesday quoted Kim as saying it is "urgent" that both North Korea and the United States "make a bold decision on halting irritating and hostile military actions against each other", while mentioning Trump's pledge to halt the military exercises. In the run-up to the summit, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made a last-minute visit to the White House to secure Trump's support in pushing for the return of Japanese citizens abducted in North Korea.

Trump, who returned to Washington early on Wednesday, hailed the meeting with Kim, the first between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader, as a success that had removed the North Korean nuclear threat. A year ago it tested long-range missiles that could reach the US mainland, although it remains unclear if it has mastered the technology to deliver a nuclear warhead that could re-enter the atmosphere and hit its target.

The meeting was also a "defining moment" for Trump, leader of "the world's police at the moment", said Cabalza.

The purchases are being finalized as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claims that the USA can achieve the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula in just two and a half years.

On his plane, Trump talked with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at around 8-twenty to share the results of the Joint Statement with North Korea. KCNA also reported that Trump had expressed his intention to lift sanctions "over a period of goodwill dialogue" between the two countries. The appearance of compliance will weaken the sanctions regime further.
