The hurricane has reached winds of 85 miles per hour, making it a Category 1 storm and the second named hurricane for the Atlantic season.
Hurricanes reach Category 2 strength when their winds attain a sustained force of 96 to 110mph.
The storm, though, is still expected to send swells on the North Carolina coast as well as the mid-Atlantic, the network said. "The colder waters have likely stabilized the boundary layer, which has inhibited stronger winds aloft from mixing down to the surface", according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The storm was about 570 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, on Wednesday.
Stormy conditions are expected to taper off through the overnight hours as Chris continues to push northeast.
Oil and gas companies operating in Newfoundland and Labrador's offshore weren't expecting any significant impact to their operations as a result of post-tropical storm Chris. Atlantic Canada residents are being warned these conditions could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Chris has been downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm, the National Weather Service said Thursday.
On its current path, Chris would pass over or near the Avalon Peninsula in southeastern Newfoundland later Thursday or early Friday and weaken on a path toward Iceland and perhaps Ireland.
"We're also pinpointing the remnants of Beryl", Bridges said.
No other tropical system exists at this time and nothing else is expected to develop within the next five days over the entire Atlantic basin.
"The fate Chris will bring us is far from yet determined".
