Trump, Obama, Katy Perry, others lose Twitter followers

Why President Trump Just Lost Over 100,000 Twitter Followers

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey lost 200,000 followers in account purge

President Trump lost a bunch of followers, as did former president Barack Obama.

On Wednesday, Twitter announced that they were performing a "purge", of sorts, which would get rid of frozen or suspicious accounts.

Former President Obama lost more than 2 million followers on Twitter this week as the social platform removed inactive and locked accounts from follower counts, according to a preliminary review by The Hill. Katy Perry, the most followed person on Twitter, lost at least 1.5 million followers, leaving her leaving her at 107 million followers, Variety reports.

Twitter said it had taken the decision due to its "ongoing and global effort to build trust".

Meanwhile Britney Spears (14th in terms of followers) did lose more than 2 million, and Twitter's own corporate Twitter account (16th) lost more than 7 million.

The decision had an nearly immediate impact with followers of many noted Indian politicians and film stars seeing a sharp decline.

Trump visit to United Kingdom begins on awkward note
It noted that numerous demonstrations are being planned for July 12 to 14, surrounding the visit of the President. A giant orange balloon depicting Trump as an angry baby in a nappy has been launched in London .

The drop in the follower count, however, has nothing to do with popularity of the Modi government.

'@MisterseunPR' said: "Just lost over a thousand followers". We really don't know how is Big B going to react to his decreased number of followers considering he's already been on a rant threatening to quit Twitter if they don't stop reducing his follower count.

"We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation", Vijaya Gadde, Twitter's legal, policy, and trust and safety lead, wrote in a post.

The average user was told to expect a drop of four or fewer followers, but warned others would "experience a more significant drop". Other accounts were locked for tweeting large amounts of unwarranted replies or mentions, misleading links, or "if a large number of accounts block the account after mentioning them".

By Thursday, Twitter had slashed tens of millions of accounts with suspicious behaviour, but the social media giant did not provide an exact figure.

Actor Deepika Padukone lost over 2.8 lakh followers, Aamir Khan 3 lakh, Hrithik Roshan 2.55 lakh, cricketer Virat Kohli 1.25 lakh and Sachin Tendulkar 2 lakh.
