The St. Louis Cardinals have fired manager Mike Matheny and named bench coach Mike Shildt as interim manager.
The team also announced hitting coach John Mabry and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller have also been dismissed. He was the team's 49 manager and had compiled a record of 591-473 wins-losses.
While the team won't hold an official news conference until tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m., President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak offered some words on the subject.

The Cardinals are 47-46 and in third place in the NL Central.

Date night for me would be someone being thoughtful about the person they care about and being with them". Is it time for them to take their relationship to the next level? She continued, "That's what he said".
It's also entirely possible that Matheny's dismissal is simply a shake-up, and that St. Louis will be searching for a candidate whom they believe can get the most out of the club's young core in a second-half push towards the playoffs. The Cardinals acquired cleanup hitter Marcell Ozuna from the Miami Marlins during the off-season, and they had high hopes for right-hander Alex Reyes in his return to the rotation after missing all of last season following Tommy John surgery.
Ozuna has failed to live up to lofty expectations, entering Saturday night's game hitting.270 with 10 home runs.
The North Carolina native managed for eight seasons in the Cardinals farm system where his clubs won league championships in 2010 and 2011 with Johnson City of the rookie Appalachian League and in 2012 with Springfield of the Texas League (AA). The Athletic cited multiple sources in reporting that Matheny and Fowler have barely spoken in months.
Additionally, Matheny has been involved in an ongoing feud with outfielder Dexter Fowler and a recent report by The Athletic's Mark Saxon alleges Matheny utilized veteran relief pitcher Bud Norris as an informant and that Norris has been particularly harsh toward fellow reliever Jordan Hicks.
Matheny agreed to a three-year contract extension after the 2016 season to keep him with St. Louis through the 2020 season.
