The National Hurricane Center on Sunday warned residents of Hawaii that Hurricane Hector, a Category 3 storm, could make landfall on the islands this week.
The center of the storm was located about 1,360 miles east of South Point, Hawaii, as of the NHC's 2 a.m. PDT update.
Hector was a Category 3 storm early Sunday as it churned toward the Hawaiian Islands, an archipelago that includes the Big Island. The storm was moving west at 16 miles per hour and had maximum sustained winds of 155.
The County of Hawai'i reports that the county is preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Hector in the Central Pacific region later this week. After that, gradual weakening is expected Monday night through Wednesday.

He owns National Football League team the Los Angeles Rams and NBA team the Denver Nuggets, among others. Unai Emery, the former manager of Paris Saint-Germain, was appointed in his place.
Hector is on a trajectory that would see it hit the southern coast of Big Island on Wednesday morning - putting it on a collision course with Kilauea on the southern part of the island.
"While the official forecast track continues to lie to the south of the Hawaiian islands, only a slight deviation to the north of the forecast track would significantly increase potential impacts to the state of Hawaii", forecasters said, according to the Star Advertiser. The center of Hector will pass just south of the Big Island by about 150 to 200 miles, close enough to the Big Island to bring enhanced showers and thunderstorms and gusty winds. Kilauea's latest volcanic event began more than three months ago, sending destructive currents of lava into neighborhoods on the island's southeast side. "It is still too soon to tell what effects this hurricane will have (if any) on the Hawaii islands".
At least 700 homes have been destroyed, authorities estimate, and thousands of people have been displaced.
