The Oscars are adding a new category for popular films and shortening the award ceremony to three hours.
The changes follow an uneasy period for the Oscars, after the four-hour long 91st Academy Awards attracted only 26.5m viewers, a drop of 19% since the previous year and the first time in a decade ratings had dropped below 30m.
Ironically, the Academy will look like it had a great idea here next Oscarcast, but a lot of that will be if the billion-dollar ceiling-shattering zeitgeist Marvel movie Black Panther gets nominations, especially if the film is in the mix for Best Picture.
The Academy also mentioned that the 2020 Oscars will be airing weeks earlier than usual on February 8.
It's among three changes approved on Tuesday by the Academy's board of governors. There are no other details available about the award yet, including eligibility information, but the change is part of a continued effort by the Academy to keep the Oscars "relevant in a changing world".
Also, the 92nd Oscar ceremony in 2020 will air on the much earlier date of Sunday, February 9, presumably to battle complaints that the show's usual late-February or early-March date feels a little late. For comparison, last year's ceremony aired in early March and the upcoming 2019 show is set for February 24.
Adama Traoré will join Premier League side Wolves in a €20m deal
I had a chat with Gibbo yesterday and a good chat with Adama and I hope they're both successful at their new clubs. They know I like to push myself everyday and I have my dreams too to be the best player I can be'.
"To honor all 24 award categories, we will present select categories live, in the Dolby Theatre, during commercial breaks (categories to be determined)", a letter to Academy members reads.
The Academy is making some changes to the Oscars.
Finally, the date of 2020's Oscars has moved forward. Specific categories will be determined at a later date, but the winning moments will be edited and aired in a later broadcast. "Popular films are films!"
After the news broke, film aficionados immediately dove in to the discussion to give their guesses as to what this new "popular film" category will be.
"Oscars designating a new award for "popular movies" just reiterates to its entire voting body and the world the inane conception that genre movies aren't as good as dramatic! independent! films!" wrote Polygon's Julia Alexander.
