Rand Paul says ‘big mistake’ not to have dialogue with Moscow, invites Russian MPs to DC

Senator Paul says he's invited Russian lawmakers to another meeting in Washington to continue their "wonderful conversation". Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, on a trip that The Washington Post described as "a bid to increase engagement with the country". "[Monday], I met with Chairman Kosachev, and we agreed on the importance of continued dialogue".

"I think this is incredibly important, " Paul said after the high-profile sit-down.

During the meeting at the Federation Council, Paul said that the United States and Russia "need to have dialogue", adding that the former Cold War foes are "in close proximity" in many hotspots around the world, including in Syria.

Kosachev said the visit is especially valuable as some USA representatives are attempting to treat all contacts with Russian politicians as toxic ones.

Paul noted that Russian lawmakers have not visited the U.S. Capitol in three years.

Trump was criticized after the summit with Putin for supporting the Russian leader's denial Moscow was involved in meddling in the 2016 US election.

The House and Senate issued a flurry of bills and resolutions and to censure Russian Federation and remind Putin that his aggressive foreign policy actions are intolerable to USA lawmakers. Paul has been one of Trump's most outspoken supporters following the criticism Trump faced - including from some within his own party - for the US President's handling of his meeting with Putin in July. He was accompanied by Peter Goettler, Cato's president and chief executive, and Don Huffines, a Texas state senator who was chairman of Mr. Paul's presidential campaign in the state.

It was "opposition research", Trump said, not collusion.

Kosachev said that the meeting could happen as early as this fall.

Russian state media also reported that Slutsky asked Paul about Maria Butina, the Russian national charged with conspiracy to act as an agent of Russia within the US.

"We had general discussions about a lot of issues", Paul responded.

Trump has invited Putin to the White House, a move largely panned by lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
