"And if a team flashed a first-round pick at Oakland for the services of Mack, who wants an extension beyond the nearly $13.5 million he is scheduled to make this season under the fifth-year option of his rookie contract and the two franchise tags that could await him in 2019 and 2020, the Raiders would be silly to not at least listen". "I mean if Khalil Mack isn't happy with the contract he has with the Raiders, then he's going to want something from any team that's going to be willing to trade for him". So, it would be shocking if the Raiders made a decision to trade him, right?
The point of acknowledging the need for a new contract is to make it clear that will cut into what the Raiders can reasonably expect to get in a trade for Mack. He was named first team All-Pro at both positions in 2015 (a historic moment), and was the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year the following season. All of the ingredients seem to be in place for a lengthy standstill between Mack and the Raiders which leaves the question open to whether the Raiders would actually consider trading him.
Gutekunst never said Mack by name during his answer, but he caught himself from saying too much more.
It is evident that Khalil Mack is worth the cost in draft picks and money that he demands from a talent standpoint, but would it be a fiscally responsible decision for the Packers to acquire him.
Manchester United Make Diego Godin Approach
Manchester United have had a frustrating transfer window so far, having been unable to secure a number of priority targets. Mourinho is said to be keen to add an experienced centre-half to his ranks in time for the new season.
"I think the one guy that you did not mention, who probably carries more weight in the pass rush than anybody else on the 49ers, and that would be DeForest Buckner".
For these reasons, I believe that the Packers should enter into serious negotiations with the Raiders if Mack is indeed on the trade block. Needless to say, he's one of the top five edge rushers in the game.
"The Lions have the cap space ($33 million in 2019) to make a move for Mack, but they'd likely have to give up high-round picks for the 2019 and 2020 drafts as well as let defensive end Ezekiel Ansah walk in order to make it happen".
