An shallow quake measuring 7.0 struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Lombok on Sunday, killing dozens of people and injuring many more, authorities said on Monday.

At 6.46pm Sunday 5 August local time, a magnitude 6.9 quake struck Lombok, with the epicentre located 18 kilometres south-west of East Lombok island.

Lombok was hit by another powerful 6.4 quake a week earlier on July 29, killing 17 people and injuring hundreds of people.

The Indonesian archipelago, where Lombok and Bali are located, is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a 40,000-kilometer (25,000-mile) area of intense seismic and volcanic activity where most of the world's earthquakes occur.

The death toll had risen to 91 and will "definitely increase", he said, adding that two of the deaths were in Bali and the rest in Lombok.

Rescuers are still struggling to reach survivors of the deadly Indonesian quake that has killed at least 91 people.

Witnesses said the quake woke up residents and tourists, who ran out of their hotels.

The agency said small tsunamis measuring 10 centimeters and 13 cm in height were detected at Carik Village in North Lombok and Badas in Sumbawa Island, respectively.
