Manchester United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward and head of corporate development Matt Judge are both at the club's Carrington training complex this morning as they try to deliver a late signing for Jose Mourinho. That much we do know.
Manchester United wanted to sign Atletico Madrid star Godin after failing to lure the likes of Toby Alderwiereld, Harry Maguire and Yerry Mina to Old Trafford.
Now that the Godin deal has fallen through, it looks like United won't be signing any new central defenders before this evening's 5pm deadline - a position Jose Mourinho has seen as a priority to strengthen.
Mourinho is said to be keen to add an experienced centre-half to his ranks in time for the new season.
Godin, the captain of the Uruguay national side, is widely considered to be one of the best defenders in the world, and at 32, has plenty of experience.
Manchester United have had a frustrating transfer window so far, having been unable to secure a number of priority targets. He has 122 global caps and has scored 8 times for Uruguay.

However, in order to meet that deadline, and include the new category, some categories will be shifted out of the telecast. And finally, they are planning a more "globally accessible, three-hour telecast" for the Academy Awards .
It is believed that Manchester United were willing to pay off the 32-year old's £17.5 million release clause and had tabled a lucrative two-year contract worth £150,000-a-week in wages.
"I'm not confident, I'm not confident and the market closes today so is time at least for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed", he told reporters when asked about his transfer options.
"So I will have to focus on the players I have".
Godin has reportedly rejected a €9m-per-season offered by United in order to stay at Madrid.
United have signed three players this transfer window, Diogo Dalot, Fred, and Lee Grant.
