Qualcomm boosts mid-range smartphone AI with Snapdragon 670 mobile platform

Qualcomm will reveal its new smartwatch platform on 10 September

Qualcomm has launched the Snapdragon 670 chip to improve the performance of AI on mid-range mobile devices. While no company has made plans for a phone running on the new Snapdragon 670, Qualcomm confirmed that such an announcement is imminent.

Qualcomm has also thrown its AI Engine into the mix, so the Snapdragon 670 has the tech to support neural networks, the TensorFlow machine learning framework, Caffe and Caffe2 and other artificial intelligence development tools. The next best thing is a 600 series processor, the best of which up to now has been the Snapdragon 660.

The Snapdragon X12 LTE modem is included here (first seen on the Snapdragon 820 chipset) as well as the Hexagon 685 DSP and the Spectra 250 ISP that can handle a 25-megapixel main camera or 16-megapixel dual cameras. A more noteworthy upgrade is the Snapdragon 670's reduced power consumption, with Qualcomm claiming it's 30 per cent more energy efficient than the Snapdragon 660. The Snapdragon 670 SoC features an octa-core CPU, with two 2GHz performance cores and six 1.7GHz efficiency cores.

PUBG Opens A Website Called "Fix PUBG"
The initiative casts its net wide as it targets performance, matchmaking, bug fixes , quality of life improvements and more. Last week, PUBG Corp. issued a statement about when we could see the next map drop on Xbox One consoles, too.

According to the firm, the particular focus of the processors is to target AI-driven applications such as smart camera focus and settings.

Qualcomm says that it is building this chip because of demand by manufacturers, which means there's also demand for such handset price points by consumers.

Back in May, Qualcomm told us it will be upgrading its aging Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset this year.
