Lionel Messi Barcelona have announced Messi will be captain next season

Lionel Messi has been confirmed as the new Barcelona captain, replacing departed club icon Andres Iniesta in the role.

Busquets was once said to be former manager Pep Guardiola's first name on the team-sheet during his tenure on the helm of the club.

Rather ironically when you consider the fact La Masia is struggling to produce talent for the first team, all four captains of the club spent time in the academy and were trained by the Blaugrana. One of the most talented players to come out of La Masia, Sergio has been one of the captains since 2014/15.

The U.S. committee's request comes at a time of growing speculation about Assange's future and his possible ejection from the embassy after six years.

Messi will be the primary captain for the new season, but Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique and Sergio Roberto will share the responsibility when needed.

Gerard Pique is next in line as third choice while Sergi Roberto is the last of the group, taking the place of Javier Mascherano, who signed for Hebei China Fortune in January. Roberto, meanwhile, did not become a senior squad member full time until 2013 but made his debut in 2010 in the Copa del Rey and his first Champions League appearance against Real Madrid in the 2011-12 semifinals, thereby representing the club earlier than Jordi Alba.

The Argentina captain takes the club's armband from Iniesta, who succeeded Xavi Hernandez as captain in 2015 but left for Japanese club Vissel Kobe in June.
