While defending the handling of the previous storm, he urged caution in regards to the new one bearing down on North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

One year on and in the middle of hurricane season once again, the federal response to Hurricane Maria has come under further scrutiny.

Cuomo also indicated last week that he was going to help families sue Trump for his inaction during the storm, accusing the White House of violating Puerto Ricans' constitutional rights of equal protection under the law.

The president raised eyebrows on Tuesday when during an Oval Office meeting to go over preparations for Hurricane Florence that is barreling toward the East Coast with Category 4 winds he touted his controversial response to Maria. Much of the U.S. territory was without power for weeks.

Chávez said in his statement that the agency had "been in contact with FEMA and the Department of Health to test the water inventory received by the federal agency". North and SC and Virginia ordered mass evacuations along the coast. Maria was a Category 4 with 154 miles per hour winds.

The co-hosts questioned whether Trump even "cares" about how many died in Puerto Rico, and whether - as Whoopi Goldberg put it - "he's living in a whole other realm of reality".

He called on the governor of Puerto Rico Ricardo Rossello to launch an official independent investigation into the incident.

That storm is blamed for almost 3,000 deaths in the self-governing USA commonwealth where local officials have criticized the Trump administration for neglecting the Caribbean island in wake of the hurricane.

Nervous officials also are keeping an eye on a third Atlantic storm, Helene, but it is not expected to have an impact on land in the coming days as it moves north over open water.
