Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars has revealed that Barcelona's offer for Frenkie de Jong this summer fell short of Ajax's valuation, and ruled out a January exit for the youngster.

According to Don Balon, senior players in the Barca squad, including Philippe Coutinho, are aware that the La Liga champions are pushing to get a deal in place in the coming weeks which will see De Jong join them ahead of next season as they look to fend off stiff competition for his signature.

Barcelona's pursuit of Frenkie de Jong hasn't stopped even though the transfer window is now shut.

De Jong's stock has risen further following his impressive performance for Netherlands in their 2-1 defeat to France in the UEFA Nations League at the weekend.

Ajax are well known for developing some fantastic young players, and have proven that they are willing to sell their star players to Europe's elite once they receive a satisfactory offer.

"Maybe someday I'll join Barcelona, but not this season", he told NOS last month. I'm staying at Ajax.

However, Overmars is adamant de Jong will not be leaving the club, even if Barca were to make an improvement on Tottenham's offer.

"None of our players will leave in January". However, that said manager Ernesto Valverde is certainly not happy and has made a decision to splurge a little further, targeting the likes of Adrien Rabiot, Marco Verratti, Paul Pogba, Frenkie De Jong and many others as potential choices.

Having come through the youth ranks at Willem II, De Jong moved to Ajax in the summer of 2015 and established himself as a first-team regular in the 2017-18 campaign.
