The tariffs, ranging from 5 percent to 25 percent, would apply to 5,207 products, and USA actions will determine whether China adopts the additional duties, Beijing said at the time.

The Focus Active was set to be the first Chinese-made Ford offered in the USA, while General Motors now imports the Buick Envision SUV and Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid.

Writing this spring, vehicle and Driver described the Focus Active as "a four-door Focus hatchback with a 1.2-inch suspension lift, black plastic around the wheel arches, faux skid plates at front and rear, and a slightly different front bumper and grille design". It stopped making Focus sedans at a Wayne, Michigan, plant in May. In January, the company also announced its "direct contribution" to the US economy through investments and other spending would exceed $350 billion over the next five years, while it would establish a new Apple campus to house technical support for customers.

Kristin Dziczek of the Center of Automotive Research says there's simply no motivation for Ford to build the Focus Active in the U.S now.

Meanwhile, General Motors is seeking an exemption from the same tariffs on vehicles that hit Ford, suggesting that it will have to pull the China-made Envision SUV off the market if the exemption is not granted.

While Apple has doubled down on its software and services businesses in order to decrease reliance on hardware sales and hedge against a decelerating smartphone market, wherein replacement cycles have elongated and competition has increased from lower-cost rivals, iPhones still account for roughly 60% of Apple's top line. Mr. Trump insinuated in a weekend Twitter post that Ford would build the small vehicle in USA instead of importing it from China.

"Because all tariffs ultimately show up as a tax on United States consumers, they will increase the cost of Apple products that our customers have come to rely on in their daily lives", the company said.

Chinese regulators have shown their willingness to attack foreign companies in disputes with other governments.

Apple itself has already said which products would be hit as a result of the tariffs.

In a statement released to the press while aboard the US Air Force One, Trump referred to the USD$200 billion import tariff as a policy that could happen much sooner depending on how Beijing is going to react against it.
