Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law granted parole, reach Lahore to attend Kulsoom's funeral

Parole of Nawaz Sharif, Maryam, son-in-law extended by 3 days

Deeply dejected by the death of his spouse, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif passed a quiet day at Jatiumra residence.

Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar, now serving jail terms in the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi after being convicted by an accountability court in a corruption case in July, were initially granted a 12-hour parole to attend the funeral.

Kulsoom's funeral prayers will be held at the Sharif Medical City in Jati Umra neighbourhood at 5 pm (local time) today.

Nawaz Sharif and other Sharif family members excluding 68-year-old Kulsoom's two sons Hassan and Hussain Nawaz attended the prayers.

Her body will be brought back here and buried on Friday in the Jati Umra Lahore residence of the Sharif family.

Nawaz Sharif's sons Hassan Nawaz, Hussain Nawaz, PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif along with Ishaq Dar and Chauhdry Nisar were also in attendance.

The parole of Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam, and son-in-law Capt (retd) Mohammad Safdar was extended by three days on Wednesday to allow them to attend the funeral of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, according to a media report. Sharif and two of his family members are now serving prison terms in a corruption case.

A large number of people are gathered outside of the Regent Park Mosque.

The coffin of the Begum Kulsoom Nawaz is being taken to the Heathro Airport after funeral prayers.

Heavy contingent of police has been deployed at the Jati Umra to provide security to the Sharif family.

The party leader remarked that this should serve as a lesson for the people.

Sources inside Jattiumra say Nawaz Sharif saw his mother and a couple of other members of the family and spent most of the time quietly in his room.

When Shehbaz reached Adiala Jail to meet Nawaz after the demise of Begum Kulsoom, the latter initially refused to come out of jail on parole in protest against his conviction and detention.
