Hurricane Florence flood victims in North Carolina turn to social media for help

Cox stayed behind with fellow meteorologist Shane Hinton until they were the last two in the building, The Weather Channel reported.

In a second video, Cox, who was now by himself, announced that a sister station in Myrtle Beach would take over the weather coverage.

"We are still trying to rescue about 150 residents that did not evacuate, and we are now going in with water rescues to get these folks to a shelter", Outlaw said.

- A North Carolina TV station had to evacuate its newsroom in the middle of Hurricane Florence coverage as floodwaters surrounded the building.

Amber Parker, a spokeswoman for Craven County, where New Bern is located, told CNN early Friday morning the county had already logged more than 100 service calls from residents trapped on their roofs or in their cars. The building has been evacuated, just so that you know. With this happening now, an upper ridge is strengthening overhead, which will keep us basking in late summer heat!

Hurricane Florence was downgraded to a Category 1 storm with a 10-foot storm surge but forecasters have warned the downgrade will not affect the potential threat of the storm.

As of 5 a.m., Florence's western eye wall is now making landfall north of Wilmington, North Carolina.

The National Hurrican Center (NHC) in its latest 10am BST update said: "On the forecast track, the center of Florence is expected to move inland across extreme southeastern North Carolina and extreme eastern SC today and Saturday".

"Maximum sustained winds remain near 90 miles per hour (150 km/h) with higher gusts".
