One injured after rockfall at pristine beach in Zakynthos

Tons of rock broke away from the cliff face, falling down onto the popular "Shipwreck Beach" in Zante.

There were at least seven people injured in the rockfall, but according to coastguard officials, none of them received life-threatening injuries.

A government statement said a 34-year-old Czech woman had been hospitalised with a fractured vertebra, while her husband and two children sustained light injuries.

Greek authorities on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, say a landslide at a popular beach on the western island of Zakynthos has resulted in at least one injury, while coast guard officials were seeking to determine whether there were any people missing.

A couple of small vessels overturned from the force of the fall that caused high waves, witnesses told authorities.

The other three people injured were treated and released.

"So far, we haven't found any trapped people but we will continue searching", a fire brigade official said.

Ms Bridges, of Horndon-on-theHill, Essex, said: "We started to hear this almighty cracking sound and the first lot came down, quickly followed by the second lot". Rescue services employed sniffer dogs to search the beach itself for possible victims of the rockfall.
