Rahul Gandhi said Hollande had effectively called Modi a thief, and accused the prime minister and Anil Ambani of carrying out a Rs 1,30,000 crore "surgical strike" on India's defence forces.

On Twitter, Gandhi posted a video relating to French publication Mediapart which carried a story last week quoting Hollande that Reliance Defence was proposed by the Indian government to partner with Dassault Aviation for the contract. "Since Dassault did not listen to them even when the UPA was in power, the Congress wants to ensure that the deal now too gets cancelled", he said.

Modi was addressing a rally in Madhya Pradesh where he said Congress has failed to forge a credible alliance in the country and now looking for partners outside India.

He also said the Congress was trying to sour the relations between India and France by misleading everyone on the Rafale issue. "We will certainly not take all of this false propaganda lying down", Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.

Modi had announced the procurement of 36 Rafale fighters after holding talks with Hollande on April 10, 2015, in Paris.
