The Australian actress told chat show host Ellen Degeneres: "I'm proud to be the first ever plus-sized girl to be the star of a romantic comedy".
However, many were quick to point out the inaccuracy in her claim, which was downright false, pointing out that Queen Latifah has starred in a number of romantic comedies.
Wilson then earned further criticism when she defended the comment on Twitter.
"In a couple of well-intentioned moments, hoping to lift my fellow plus sized women up, I neglected to show the proper respect to those who climbed this mountain before me like Mo'Nique, Queen Latifah, Melissa McCarthy, Ricki Lake and likely many others", she said.

Demi's visit to LA comes after it was reported that she is considering not returning to the Southern California city permanently. According to People magazine , Twitter users claim to have seen Demi at Universal Studio's Halloween Horror Nights on Friday.
"Hey girl! Yeah I of course know of these movies but it was questionable as to whether: 1".
Rebel initially replied saying "there's a slight grey area" and questioned whether they were plus-sized when they filmed the movies.
Still, Wilson stood her ground amid the backlash, insisting on Twitter there were some "grey areas and technicalities" around what constitutes a rom-com, and proceeded to block critics on Twitter who said otherwise.
The Pitch Perfect star went on to say that she supports everything plus-sized women have done over the years. "Let's please not allow this business to erase our talent with giving grey areas and technicalities", the Oscar victor said.
'I fully take all the comments onboard though so thank you'.
Wilson sat down with DeGeneres Oct. 31 to chat about the film, which co-stars Adam DeVine and Liam Hemsworth and opens on Valentine's Day 2019.
