He and DeSantis two are ideological opposites, with DeSantis an ardent Trump supporter who vows to implement the president's policies, and Gillum, a progressive who advocates expanding Medicaid and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Additionally, his campaign cut ties with a volunteer during the final weeks of the race, after the volunteer was caught on video calling Florida a "cracker" state and saying the campaign was taking advantage of "white guilt".

"Other than serving in the military, becoming the 46th governor of the great state of Florida is the greatest professional honor of my life", DeSantis said.

Both candidates secured significant donations from real estate professionals in South Florida and throughout the state.

In Colorado, Democrat Jared Polis was set to become the first openly gay man to be elected governor of a USA state, after NBC News projected him to win against Republican Walker Stapleton. Scott, a Republican, had a small lead over incumbent Democrat Nelson.

In Georgia, critics have drawn attention to Kemp's dual role as a candidate for governor and as supervisor of the state's elections in his capacity as secretary of state. The outcome is the cancellation of a registration of voters, mostly Black or Hispanic. In the largest counties, that could affect the differences by as many as 2,000 total votes.

He joked during brief remarks that he wasn't sure his wife, R. Jai Gillum, whom he met at Florida A&M University, had voted for him.
