A Russian Su-27 fighter jet has intercepted a U.S. Navy EP-3E Aries plane over the Black Sea near Russian airspace and escorted it away in a safe manner, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday.

The Pentagon said that the EP-3 was conducting routine operations while the encounter happened, not provoking the Russian activity. He added that there was no communication between the two aircraft during the 25-minute ordeal.

The Navy released a short video clip Monday of the Russian jet's afterburner flaring alongside the USA aircraft.

At least six US Air Force spy planes conducted a number of flights along Russia's borders on November 5.

"There is no margin for error and insufficient time or space for our aircrews to take corrective action", US Navy Capt. Bill Ellis said in the statement. "This interaction was deemed unsafe due to the fact that the su-27, made speed the passage directly in front of the aircraft, endangering pilots and crew", the report says. "We expect them to behave within worldwide standards set to ensure safety and to prevent incidents ... unsafe actions‎ increase the risk of miscalculation and potential for midair collisions".

A US Navy statement on the incident called the Russian jet's behavior "unsafe".

American officials were not initially able to determine if the Russian aircraft was armed or not.

"Subsequently, su-27 again approached the EP-3, making the turn".

The Russian Ministry of Defense press service said that the United States intelligence aircraft had been detected and immediately picked up by a Su-27 fighter that identified and escorted it to avoid a violation of Russia's airspace boundary.

At the time, the US State Department accused the Russians of "flagrantly violating existing agreements and worldwide law".
