Questions over Mueller probe after Trump fires Sessions

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions Says Resigning At Trump's Request

Trump ousts U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, announces interim replacement

Protests in at least 900 cities nationwide, aimed at protecting Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, are planned for Thursday.

By forcing Attorney General Jeff Session to resign and appointing Matthew Whitaker-a hostile critic of Mueller's probe into election meddling-progressive organizers say the emergency nationwide #ProtectMueller protests are created to raise the alarm about the "existential threat" Whitaker poses to the investigation and to let Trump know in no uncertain terms that "nobody is above the law". One of those offices, in NY, is leading an investigation involving the president's former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, and hush money payments Cohen says he made to two women who say they had sex with Trump.

Former Gov. Chris Christie is reportedly under consideration to replace Jeff Sessions as attorney general.

White House emphasizes continuity and not disruption with Sessions' resignation.

Never in modern history has a president attacked a Cabinet member as frequently and harshly in public as Trump did Sessions, a former United States senator from Alabama and one of the first members of Congress to back Trump's presidential campaign in 2015. That has convinced many opponents of Trump that the president has Mueller in his crosshairs.

Sessions, 71, said in an undated letter to Trump: "At your request, I am submitting my resignation". That information would be disclosed to Congress at the end of the investigation, the regulations say.

"Americans must have answers immediately as to the reasoning behind" Trump's move to remove Sessions, he said.

"Whitaker must recuse and Congress must act to protect the Mueller investigation", said an organizer of the march outside the White House.

Well, this is really shocking as expecting big from Aamir Khan this film is not what the audience actually expecting from him.

The department confirmed he would be assuming oversight of the Mueller probe from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Whitaker has made it known that he is hostile to the probe into whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians and the president obstructed justice.

In April, Pingree co-sponsored House legislation to protect the Mueller investigation by making it more hard for a president to remove a special counsel.

Mr Whitaker expressed concerns over the investigation.

In 2017 he even used Trump's words, warning against Mueller engaging in a "witch hunt".

One reason Sessions endured months of taunting from Trump is that he believed he was protecting the integrity of the Justice Department and was trying to prevent the president from bringing in someone who would politicize it, according to a US official who has worked with Sessions and frequently talked with him.

The departure was the culmination of a toxic relationship that frayed just weeks into Sessions' tenure, when he stepped aside from the Russia investigation because of his campaign advocacy and following the revelation that he had met twice in 2016 with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. However, it would be an immediate priority for Democratic investigations when they officially take control of the House in January.

That left Rosenstein overseeing the investigation, and he named Mueller as special counsel.
