"The most important action to take to prevent serious illness is to get a flu vaccine now".

"Even if you are young and healthy and might be able to survive the flu, there is the risk of transmission to a friend, family member, or other loved one who might not tolerate the flu as well", said Dr. MeiLan Han, a professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Health System and director of the Michigan Airways Program. The influenza vaccine is safe and recommended for anyone over the age of 6 months.

"You may have a few days after you get your flu shot where you perhaps aren't feeling 100 percent", Han said.

Masjid-e-Ali at 47 Cedar Grove Lane will be providing the public with free flu shots, November 10 from 10:30 a.m.to 2 p.m. Flu shots were available to students, staff and faculty at a cost of $15 and supplies are limited. "Thanks to the help of the Somerset County Department of Health, we will be administering 200 flu shots, first-come, first-served, to the community at large".

Along with receiving the flu shot, Ott says it is important to: wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your nose, ears and mouth with unclean hands, cough into a tissue or your sleeve, keep frequently touched common surfaces clean, avoid hand shakes and try not to use other people's phones, computers or work tools. There are more flu shot clinics planned in the spring semester.

The influenza vaccine does not guarantee protection against the flu but it does lower the chances in contracting it. People should take additional precautions to lower their risk, including those who received the vaccine.
