With Attorney General Jeff Sessions out, Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker assumes oversight of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election meddling and any ties to Trump associates, the Justice Department confirms to CBS News correspondent Paula Reid.
Whitaker's comments on "Morning Answer" echo a CNN Op-Ed from December 2017 where he argued that the Mueller investigation was coming "dangerously close to crossing" a red line after reports suggested that the probe was looking into Trump's finances.
Napolitano said Whitaker, however, is not legally qualified for the role of acting attorney general because of "very precise laws" written by Congress in the wake of the Watergate scandal.
That drew criticism from Democrats because Whitaker, who would now take over responsibility for overseeing Mueller and his investigation, has been critical of the Mueller probe, saying it should be scaled back. That contradicted Trump's remarks on Fox News last month, when he called Whitaker "a great guy" and said "I mean, I know Matt Whitaker".
Trump also verbally attacked a female reporter when she asked him if he wanted Whitaker to "rein in" Mueller.
Whitaker wrote an op-ed for CNN past year that Trump is "absolutely correct" to say that Mueller would be going too far if he were to investigate the president's family finances.
After news broke Wednesday that Trump had forced Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign, leaders of the group United for Action of Central Florida chose to act.
Mandatory evacuations ordered due to Woolsey Fire
The blaze has spread rapidly overnight, fanned by strong winds, and has jumped Highway 101, a major route west of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles County Fire Department has issued mandatory evacuation orders south of the 101 freeway to Mulholland Highway.
It is accepted that Russia did attempt to interfere with the U.S. elections - something which Russian president Vladimir Putin denies.
The AP reported that the resignation "was the culmination of a toxic relationship" between Sessions and Trump based on a few factors, but largely Session's having recused himself from dealing with Mueller's probe.
He also called Whitaker "a very highly respected man".
Trump has not said whom he will nominate to replace Sessions.
Protesters converged in cities nationwide to call for the protection of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into potential coordination between Russian Federation and President Donald Trump's campaign.
The president tweeted, "Jeff Flake (y) doesn't want to protect the Non-Senate confirmed Special Counsel, he wants to protect his future after being unelectable in Arizona for the "crime" of doing a bad job!"
"Because a reasonable person could question your impartiality in the matter, your recusal is necessary to protect the essential and longstanding independence of the department", the attorneys general said in the letter, which was written by Healey.
