Ocasio-Cortez Slams Amazon's Plan to Locate HQ2 in Queens

This is where Amazon will build its two new headquarters

Amazon reportedly picks New York, northern Virginia for HQ2

Amazon, which started as an online bookstore two decades ago, has grown to a behemoth that had almost $180 billion in revenue previous year.

The decision was finally declared on Tuesday after a year-long bidding battle between more than 200 cities that had winded down to the 20 finalists last January including Chicago, Toronto and Los Angeles.

- $2.5 billion investment from Amazon. "For a high-cost market like Long Island City, incentives are a necessarily evil".

For its headquarters, the company didn't go with the richest offer.

Its New York location will be in the Long Island City neighbourhood of Queens, while its Arlington offices will be located in an area called National Landing.

The company has now chosen not one but two joint winners, New York City and Arlington County, Virginia, while also announcing a smaller office in Nashville, Tennessee.

It confirmed performance-based incentives of $1.5bn from the state of NY and $573m if it meets targets of the 25,000 people hired for the Arlington site netting an average wage of over $150,000.

Sure looks like Amazon's Jeff Bezos just fleeced Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio as rubes.

"Offering massive corporate welfare from scarce public resources to one of the wealthiest corporations in the world at a time of great need in our state is just wrong", said New York State Sen.

Arlington, Virginia is raising taxes to pay Amazon to move there-the company will get a $23 million cash grant over 15 years based on an increase in the local tax on hotel rooms.

The communities will pay for it: NY is forking over more than $1.5 billion in tax credits and other incentives, while Arlington is offering about a third of that - $573 million.

California's Camp Fire burned hot enough to melt aluminum in cars
The Camp Fire , burning north of San Francisco, has killed at least 29 people, matching the deadliest fire in the state's history. Satellites owned by NASA and commercial companies such as DigitalGlobe are recording images of the fires from space .

Virginia will spend $295 million on improvements to the Metro stations at Crystal City and Potomac Yards, an improved connection to Ronald Reagan National Airport and other projects.

Virginia pledged a few other goodies, such as a commitment to "regulatory flexibility" in order to allow new technologies to operate in the area, as well as confidentiality for "all materials, communications, data, and information related to this Memorandum". Two HQ2 projects would also ensure that Seattle remains Amazon's definitive headquarters.

There was no reference in the memoranda to collaboration on preserving housing affordability, hiring locally, or working with local educational institutions.

"We're talking about the single biggest economic development deal in the history of New York City", he said.

Dallas may never compete on the same level as San Francisco, New York, Seattle and Washington D.C., but that doesn't mean the city should accept defeat.

Amazon will get "performance-based direct incentives of $1.525 billion" over the next decade based on creating 25,000 jobs in Long Island City, according to the company.

These rewards come on top of $1.6 billion in subsidies Amazon has received across the United States since 2000, according to a database from the Washington-based watchdog Good Jobs First. Both of the winning cities are seen as desirable living locations, but that's also what makes living there so expensive. "So I don't have an idea about how they put together their transaction".

Losers on the firm's 20-city short list included Newark in New Jersey, Columbus in OH and Miami in Florida. The agreement also includes requirements for participation by minority and women-owned businesses in the construction process.

Amazon's emphasis on new, high-paying jobs earned publicity as it faced criticism for low wages in its sprawling warehouses.

The Nashville Operations Center is expected to deal primarily with "customer fulfillment, transportation, supply chain, and other similar activities".

Both the city and the state components of the incentive package will have to be approved by various legislative bodies.
