Saudi Arabia and the UAE on Wednesday paused their offensive aimed at taking the strategic port city of Hudaydah from the Houthi fighters.

The UN envoy for Yemen said Friday he intends to convene peace talks "shortly" in Sweden in a bid to end a war that has driven millions to the brink of starvation.

The Houthis had said in September that they wanted United Nations guarantees their plane would not have to stop in Djibouti for inspection by the Saudi-led coalition.

After the Senate killed a proposal by Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) on Thursday to block $300 million in USA arms sales to Bahrain - a key Saudi coalition ally in the Yemen war - Senators proposed another bill that would suspend all US weapons sales to Saudi Arabia and block the refueling of Saudi warplanes bombing Yemen.

"After that I think we will be quite well placed by the middle of December or before the end of the year to assess the way ahead and the likelihood of timing and pace to resolve the issues of the negotiations", Mr Griffiths said.

As for the date expected for holding the announced peace talks in Sweden, it will be on November 29 as stated in the draft resolution.

The move came hours after the US Department of State on Thursday imposed what are known as Magnitsky Act penalties on 17 Saudi Arabian individuals for their alleged involvement in Jamal Khashoggi's assassination at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in October.
