Arkansas State Police said the bus overturned along Interstate 30 near Benton, about 25 miles (40 kilometres) southwest of Little Rock, while travelling from Texas to Memphis, Tennessee. Bobby White, a spokesman for Achievement School District in Memphis, said students from five of the district's schools were on the bus. Authorities have confirmed that one child was killed and at least 40 others were injured in the crash - majority children.

Hailey said there were seat belts on the bus, but he didn't know how many people were wearing them. Injured children had been taken to hospitals in Little Rock and Benton, they added.

Investigators told WHBQ that the driver lost control of the bus, causing it to flip and roll off the interstate.

Arkansas State Police say the charter bus was carrying coaches, staff and players of a youth football team that played in a championship game in North Texas over the weekend and were headed home. The TV station reports the children are elementary-school age.

The team from the Orange Mound Youth Association - a football program in a historically black neighborhood of Memphis that has rallied around the youth football teams - was en route from Dallas, where it competed on Sunday. Live video from the scene shows the heavily damaged bus on its side in an embankment near some dense woodland, just at the crook of a sharp bend in the road.

The crash was reported to Arkansas State Police about 2:40 AM and was located at the 111 mile marker along Interstate 30. Thirteen went to Saline Memorial, and information about the condition of those patients isn't available. A hospital spokeswoman said she couldn't provide any details, citing privacy laws. The bus crashed into an oncoming tractor-trailer truck.

It "gives kids opportunity and brings the community together", he said. Prosecutors said the driver was on the phone at the time of the crash.
