U.S. signals it will suspend nuclear treaty with Russia after NATO finding

US to suspend nuclear pact over alleged violations

But NATO allies, led by Germany, have managed to persuade US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to give diplomacy one last chance before Washington pulls the plug on the historic accord. Moscow has returned accusations of non-compliance on the U.S., arguing that United States bases in Eastern Europe are not defensive but offensive and could potentially be used to target Russian Federation.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced at NATO Headquarters Tuesday that the USA will suspend its obligations under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty in 60 days because of Russia's continued violations of the treaty, shortly after NATO's foreign ministers affirmed its support for that conclusion in a new joint statement.

"It has to be fully implemented, so I hope that the time that is there to work on preserving the treaty and achieving its full implementation can be used wisely from all sides, and we will definitely try to make our part to make sure this happens".

The United States warned Russian Federation on Tuesday that it would withdraw from the Cold War-era treaty limiting mid-range nuclear arms if Moscow does not return to compliance within 60 days.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said after the decision that the United States would suspend its treaty obligations in 60 days over the alleged violations.

If Russia does not comply within the 60-day deadline, the USA will begin the six-month process of formally withdrawing from the INF treaty.

Moscow has denied its new missile violates the INF but, after several years denying its existence, it has been vague on its capabilities.

Russian Federation has said little about its Novator 9M729 cruise missile, also known as the SSC-8, other than to deny that it is in breach of the pact.

Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association, warned that failing to negotiate a solution with Moscow "risks the start of a new missile race in Europe that will undermine European security".

Speaking to NATO foreign ministers on Tuesday, Pompeo said the United States was willing to start the process of leaving the treaty, citing alleged Russian violations. "But there's been no indication to date that they have any intention of doing so". If Russia failed to comply, the US would consider the treaty to be null and void.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova denied that Russia was out of compliance with the treaty.

Stoltenberg said that he regretted seeing the INF come to a close.

The Secretary of State claimed that the USA was "upholding the rule of law" and was bound by its worldwide commitments.

"Russia scrupulously abides by the provisions of the treaty, and the USA side knows this", she said.
