Yaakov Amidror, a former national security adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said the tunnels have likely been in the works for some time, and hint at preparation for larger Hezbollah operations against Israel.

Israel's occupation forces said this week it had identified a number of passages and sent diggers and troops close the front line with Lebanon to block them.

The United Nations peacekeepers have confirmed the existence of a tunnel in northern Israel near the Lebanese border, days after Tel Aviv accused armed group Hezbollah of digging under the frontier.

The public identification of Iran isn't likely to surprise global observers, but signals aggressive moves by the Trump administration to tie Iran to the rise of terrorism not just in Israel, but across the Middle East, where Iranian-backed militants continue to strike US interests and allies.

There was no immediate reaction from Hezbollah or the Lebanese government on the United Nations statement.

Reacting to the operation, the Russians added, "At the same time, we hope that [Israel's] actions taken for this goal will not conflict with UNSC resolution 1701", referring to a United Nations Security Council agreement that helped resolve the 2006 Israel-Lebanon war. "Once again we demanded the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Shebaa farms, Kfarchouba heights and the occupied part of the al-Ghajar settlement", the Lebanese Armed Forces said.

"UNIFIL is now engaged with the parties to pursue urgent follow-up action", it said.

On the first day of Operation Northern Shield, the Israeli Army said it destroyed a Hezbollah terror tunnel from the Lebanese village of Kafr Kiya that reached 120 feet inside Israel, near the town of Metullah. He expanded on his comments on Thursday.

Netanyahu said the tunnels were big enough to be used by motorcycles, small vehicles and groups of people.

His statement came as Caretaker Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil gave instructions to file a complaint with the UN Security Council regarding Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty.

In a statement from his office, he said Israel plans to demand a response from the worldwide community at a meeting of the U.N. Security Council called for by Israel.

But what's significant is Netanyahu's domestic situation, which is in deep crisis, due to the change of battle rule as his minister of defense' resignation, and on the other hand because of the Netanyahu and his wife's corruption scandal.

Israel sent 11 members of the Engineering Corps for special training in Europe to excavate hard rock soil like the one on the Lebanese border a year ago, Haaretz reports.
