People attend a community rally for seven-year-old Jazmine Barnes in Houston, Jan. 5, 2019.
Hopkins said he will be playing Saturday's game against the Indianapolis Colts in honour of seven-year-old Barnes, who was killed last weekend.
It's been nearly a week since the 7-year-old was shot in the head by a passing motorist while riding in her mother's vehicle along with her three sisters.
The Harris County Sherriff's Office say 20-year-old Eric Black Jr. was charged early Sunday with capital murder in the December 30 slaying of Jazmine Barnes.
"Investigators do not believe Jazmine's family was the intended target of the shooting", the statement said.
Barnes' murder has caught the attention of several activists and celebrities, resulting in football player DeAndre Hopkins pledging his playoff check for costs associated with Barnes' funeral, which is set to take place on Tuesday. Sources say the alleged shooter is black, not white, and also that the shooting may have been gang-related.

Law enforcement sources told KSAT's sister station in Houston, KPRC, they had a person in custody Saturday, almost a week after Barnes was shot to death while riding in a vehicle with her sisters and mother. Jazmine died at the scene while her mother was shot in the arm. Officials also said investigators are looking into the possibility that others could be charged in the case.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office appeared to confirm the report on Saturday night when they tweeted the investigation has taken a "new direction". The post did not elaborate, and the sheriff's office did not immediately respond to phone messages.
LaPorsha Washington was embraced by family and community members before she addressed the crowd gathered at a Houston-area Walmart on Saturday, not far from where her 7-year-old daughter Jazmine Barnes was gunned down earlier this week.
A composite sketch of the driver and surveillance video of his truck was released on Thursday and a reward for information leading to his arrest has climbed to $100,000.
"We're not gonna rest until we find justice for Jazmine", Gonzalez said.
The event, a fundraiser for the family, had another objective that organizers say is even more important: Keeping Jazmine's death on people's minds.
