"There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor", Trump tweeted. I have ordered FEMA to send no more money.

He misspelled the word "Forrest", later tweeting the same message with the correct spelling of "forest". "The people of CA ― folks in Paradise ― should not be victims to partisan bickering".

"Our climate is changing - we have to change with it".

Moreover, Trump's own agencies are responsible for managing much of the woodland in the state.

Trump's tweet ignores the fact that almost 60 percent of California's forests are on land owned by the federal government, mainly the National Forest Service and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Another 40 percent is held by companies, Native American tribes or families.

Trump's latest funding threat comes as he continues to face criticism over the ongoing partial government shutdown, which affects some of FEMA's operations. That includes the Camp Fire, which touched the Plumas National Forest; the Fork Fire, in the Angeles National Forest just east of Pasadena; and the Essex Fire in the Modoc National Forest in California's far northeast corner.

Trump's threat to withhold FEMA funds from recent wildfire survivors drew a swift rebuke from California Sen.

"He's never played politics with disaster declarations and we're grateful for that", Newsom said.

Donald Trump's messaging on the fires in California has been, for the most part, woefully misguided.

"Declaring disasters is entirely the president's discretion; FEMA only makes recommendations", Fugate said in a phone interview. It is a disgraceful situation in lives & money!' Trump added.

Pique at new House Speaker Nancy Pelosi - who, as you may know, is from California - for her refusal to give him his border-wall money is a very likely motive for Trump's sudden focus on last year's wildfire problem and his simplistic and misguided "solution" for it.

Trump's tweet came a day after Newsom and Govs.

In his first full day in office on Tuesday, Gov. Newsom pledged tens of millions of dollars to fight wildfires and deal with the aftermath.
