Sputnik Lima Group Meeting Ban Censorship Now Part of Canadian Political Scene

The U.S. has pledged humanitarian aid for Venezuela but Maduro has turned it down, believing it is the first step to overthrowing him. Because the National Assembly does not recognize the legitimacy of Maduro's reelection, the body asserts that, according to the Venezuelan constitution, it is empowered to appoint the Assembly president as the country's interim acting president.

"From today, we will spare no effort in helping all Venezuelans achieve freedom, prosperity and harmony", said Pedro Sanchez, the Spanish prime minister.

There has been criticism of the Trump administration's rhetoric on Venezuela since the crisis began.

Foreign policy positions require the unanimous support of all 28 European Union countries, so Italy's veto sank efforts to agree on a beefed-up version, which would have mentioned the recognition of Guaido by numerous member states.

Peruvian Foreign Minister Nestor Francisco Popolizio Bardalen said the emboldened Venezuelan opposition "represents the beginning of the end of the dictatorship".

However Russia, China and Turkey continue to back Maduro, accusing Western nations of meddling.

Russian Federation slammed what it called interference in the oil-rich but now poor Latin American country, saying it was an attempt to 'legitimise usurped power'.

In 2019, the International Monetary Fund predicts that Venezuela's inflation will reach 10 million per cent, and an update to its World Economic Outlook in October estimated that consumer prices in the country would rise by 1,370,000 per cent by the end of 2018.

Embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro sent 100 tons of construction material to Cuba in the wake of a deadly tornado that caused serious losses in Havana a week ago, according to the Miami Herald, a move that comes as Maduro has dismissed offers of global aid amid a political crisis in his own country.

Canada has announced a humanitarian relief package for Venezuela.

Italy's 5-Star Movement, which makes up half of the ruling coalition, dissented from the European stance, saying it would never recognise self-appointed leaders.

"As a country that has an open-arms policy towards Venezuelans, we have received many important figures from the democratic opposition", said Federico Hoyos, Colombia's ambassador to Canada.

"I'm with the Venezuelan people against regimes like that of Maduro, based on violence, fear and hunger", League leader Matteo Salvini said last month.

Asked whether he would follow suit, Mr Coveney said: "No, our position has been clear".

The call came Monday from the Lima Group, which is made up of almost a dozen conservative Latin American nations and Canada.
