GM posts strong profit beat, a reassuring sign in shaky market

Providence Capital Advisors LLC boosted its stake in shares of General Motors (NYSE:GM) (TSE:GMM.U) by 2.6% in the 4th quarter, according to the company in its most recent 13F filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Barra said Wednesday electric vehicles won't reach profitability until early next decade. The auto manufacturer reported $1.43 earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter, topping the consensus estimate of $1.21 by $0.22. As a group, equities analysts anticipate that General Motors will post 6.3 earnings per share for the current fiscal year.

Earlier Wednesday, Toyota Motor Corp posted a slightly higher profit as demand for its bread-and-butter auto models from cost-conscious Chinese buyers helped offset weak North American sales of its marquee sedan models such as the Corolla and the Camry.
