Doctor hails 'miracle' baby girl in good spirits after drain ordeal

Following a nail-biting three-hour rescue mission, Garreth Jamieson of Rescue care confirmed that the little girl was alive and stable.

A resident who was out for an early morning walk thought he could hear a cat mewing from beneath a steel drain cover and lifted the lid up to look inside.

It is believed authorities were alerted to the situation after a passerby heard the baby's cries. "Durban fire department and the police search and rescue [unit] have cleared around the pipe and are trying to reach the child". When they finally got to the baby they broke into the pipe and managed to reach in and grab her.

Rescue Care spokesman, Garrith Jamieson said the baby was stuck quite a deep way down the stormwater pipes.
