Following a nail-biting three-hour rescue mission, Garreth Jamieson of Rescue care confirmed that the little girl was alive and stable.
A resident who was out for an early morning walk thought he could hear a cat mewing from beneath a steel drain cover and lifted the lid up to look inside.
It is believed authorities were alerted to the situation after a passerby heard the baby's cries. "Durban fire department and the police search and rescue [unit] have cleared around the pipe and are trying to reach the child". When they finally got to the baby they broke into the pipe and managed to reach in and grab her.
Rescue Care spokesman, Garrith Jamieson said the baby was stuck quite a deep way down the stormwater pipes.

"Currently she is in a stable condition and the KZN EMS helicopter is now taking off to get the child to the hospital", said McKenzie. "Our miracle baby was taken out of the drain alive, looking healthy and strong", a relieved Cox said. After she was extricated, she was airlifted to hospital. The community was also very supportive and helpful which was great'.
"The baby is trapped in a storm water drain".
"This matter will have to be investigated, to find the parents", he added.
