Johnson wins, Byron gets pole in Daytona

Johnson made it back to the start/finish line first and soon after the skies opened up, the race was called in Johnson's favour.

To be eligible, drivers must meet one of five criteria: past Daytona 500 winners and past Daytona 500 pole winners who raced full-time last season, previous Clash winners who raced full-time a year ago, pole winners from last season and drivers who qualified for the playoffs in 2018.

Byron and Bowman edged the other two Hendrick drivers: seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson and fan favorite Chase Elliott. The 18-year-old son of NASCAR veteran Jeff Burton kicks off his first fulltime season in the Gander Outdoors Truck Series next week.

"I really feel like we'll be able to be competitive", Mears said.

Hendrick still has his folksy Southern charm, still longs for those simpler days of racing, still wants to arrive in Daytona knowing his cars are the very best in the field. Wallace, who drives for seven-time DAYTONA 500 champion Richard Petty, finished second in the DAYTONA 500 a year ago. Of the 20 drivers who started the race, 11 finished it and nine finished it on the lead lap.

It was an exhibition race that didn't count in the Monster Energy Cup series, but for Jimmie Johnson the Advance Auto Parts Clash was as important as any contest he has ever won.

Of course, every year we get done with The Clash and try to extrapolate a conclusion in advance of the 500 and the conditions just aren't the same.

"It's been a pretty awesome day", said team owner Rick Hendrick, whose organization fielded the four fastest cars in Daytona 500 qualifying.

"I moved down a little bit and the next thing I knew, I was getting turned in the left rear", Menard told Fox Sports 1. "That was my first dealership". The last Daytona 500 pole-sitter to win the race was Dale Jarrett in 2000. It's all my dad ever raced. When Johnson scuffled through the worst season of his career, he felt the strain of not reaching victory lane.

This race was scheduled to be a 75-lap race around the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) high-banked Daytona International Speedway oval in Daytona Beach, Florida, but it was cut short to only 59 laps due to rain, which caused several caution flag periods throughout the race.

"There's different pressures put on each team, and certainly outside pressures of ... somebody came up with a great idea of who's going to win first, Jimmie or Chad, and the pressure, can we win again", Johnson said. "I made a move and got to the inside and was side drafting him, and his vehicle started wobbling".
