Facebook says it’s resolved outage issues and denies attack

Facebook Blames'Server Configuration Change for Massive Outage

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp suffered a global outage. What happened?

On Wednesday, Facebook denied the outage was due to a cyber attack, though some have questioned if it wasn't an outage caused by a hacker. It's believed to be the biggest interruption ever suffered by the social network.

In addition to Facebook, irate users noted that the outage likewise affected Instagram and WhatsApp.

Telegram has gained as many as 3 million new members in the last 24 hours and for this sudden growth it has to thank Facebook. "We're working on getting this fixed as fast as we can". Facebook's ad platform, Facebook Ad Manager, was also down.

"Yesterday, as a result of a server configuration change, many people had trouble accessing our apps and services", the company said in a tweet. The hashtag #FacebookDown and #InstagramDown were trending on Twitter for much of the day. It also affected people on the West Coast, including in Portland. Twitter even made the subject into a Twitter Moment.

Numbers drawn for $448 million Powerball jackpot
On May 18, Little Ferry resident Tayeb Souami won the $315.3 million prize with a ticket he bought at ShopRite in Hackensack. Those picking the 5 correct white balls will win $1 million, or more if a Power Play is purchased.

"We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps". Users in Asia were having problems on Thursday morning.

After staying tight-lipped on the cause of the outage for almost 24 hours, Facebook early Thursday afternoon blamed it on a "server configuration change that triggered a cascading series of issues".

DownDetector website - one of the internet's most used sources of numbers on outages - showed the number of complaints had peaked at more than 12,000, gradually falling to about 180 as of 11 a.m. ET on Thursday. This is an important draw for people concerned with their privacy online, particularly in light of the fact that Facebook, Inc.is reportedly now under criminal investigation for secret data sharing deals.
