Indian Wells: Novak Djokovic beaten by Philipp Kohlschreiber in third round

Indian Wells: Novak Djokovic and Fabio Fognini book semi-final spot

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has slammed the media's coverage of him in the wake of Novak Djokovic's stunning Indian Wells exit.

Serbia's Djokovic, who now holds three of the four Grand Slam titles, was beaten 6-4, 6-4 in his third round match at the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) event against Germany's world number 39 Phlipp Kohlschreiber. "She sort of knew what she wanted to do more than me".

This win was her first victory over a No. 1 not named Williams. Osaka fired her coach and lost in the first round in Dubai before taking on a new coach, Jermaine Jenkins, who came on court during the match.

"It's an incredible win for me", Kohlschreiber said after his second victory over Djokovic in 10 career matches. It's part of our world, and we just have to bounce back very quickly.

Venus Williams is into the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mona Barthel.

Shapovalov, seeded 24th at Indian Wells, beat the 2014 US Open champion 6-4 6-2 and will play Poland's Hubert Hurkacz next. "I need to do what I want, and what I want is to play the tournaments I want to play".

Vondrousova, who beat 2018 runner-up Daria Kasatkina and former French Open victor Jelena Ostapenko on the way to the fourth round, will go for another big win when she faces sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina, who battled to a 7-6 (10/8), 5-7, 6-4 victory over Australian Ashleigh Barty.

Eighth-seeded American John Isner made it safely through, downing Argentina's Guido Pella 6-3, 6-4 to set up a meeting with Russia's Karen Ahachanov, a 7-5, 6-3 victor over Russian lucky loser Andrey Rublev.

DEVELOPING | Multiple dead after shootings at New Zealand mosques
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said it's "one of New Zealand's darkest days" after multiple fatalities at the two mosques. Police have urged anyone in central Christchurch to stay indoors and report any suspicious behaviour immediately to 111.

While Federer and Nadal have voted against having Chris Kermode as ATP Chairman, Player's Council President Djokovic has backed Kermode. "He feels the same way, so that's very awkward sometimes".

Kohlschreiber notched his first ever victory over a number one-ranked player, ending Djokovic's bid for a sixth Indian Wells crown.

"I think I put out a pretty good strategy on the court", Kohlschreiber said, "very clever serve, good return game". "Completely different conditions today: Ball bounces much higher. I'm really excited about that". "He deserved to win".

"I had to get over it in an hour, because I played doubles", Djokovic added.

The display of emotion didn't change anything as Kohlschreiber opened the second set with a service break and broke Djokovic again in the seventh game to give himself a chance to serve for the match.

He will play French 18th seed Gael Monfils in the fourth round.

Nonetheless, Djokovic's Indian Wells campaign is not yet completely over as he is still alive in the doubles, where he, along with his partner Fabio Fognini beat the pair of Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau in the quarter-finals. Then it was Kohlschreiber's turn to show some nerves, a sudden spate of four errors, including a double fault, giving Djokovic a break. There were more men's upsets on Tuesday with No. 6 Kei Nishikori, No. 10 Marin Cilic and No. 14 Daniil Medvedev all losing.

Andreescu, who has won 23 and lost just three matches this year, will meet Spain's Garbiñe Muguruza next following the former world number one's 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 win over Kiki Bertens.
